I was like “Alright well if you say so Mr. Vee.” So I started my new YouTube channel a couple of months ago. It took me a while to realize what I wanted my first video to be. One day I stumbled across this video of Matt D’Avella basically explaining what it’s really like to be a YouTuber. In it he mentioned HIS first YouTube video which basically just a “Hey YouTube” video. I think that’s what it was actually called. So I decided to make the same kind of video.
Took me 2 WEEKS. I mean the actually work was like 2-3 hours max, but to really motivate myself to do the work it took a while. Does this mean this isn’t really what I want(ed) to do?
I don’t think so
In fact, after quite a bit of reflection, I’ve come to the conclusion that the answer to that question is a firm “No”. Most of the times anyway. Or at least some. The truth is starting a YouTube channel feels really weird at first, because you don’t know what to expect.
I feel like for most people there’s two possible motivations. Either the riches that some of the most popular YouTubers are showing off in their videos or on their socials OR it’s that good feeling you get while binge watching YouTube videos until 3 am. For me it’s both those two and neither at the same time. For me it’s creating something. Creating something that will make somebody feel something – whether it’s sadness, happiness, that feeling when you watch something and go “WOW!” or any other feeling really.
I don’t think you can make it on YouTube if you don’t have that “creative” drive at least on a certain level. And this goes for many other creative activities really, because to stay motivated like that – you have to enjoy it at least a little bit.
Fake it ’till you make it
For now, I’ve realized that I have to force myself to write or film or edit for like the first 5 minutes until I realize that I like doing that. Just like this blog post. I turned off all distractions and just started writing and after a couple of sentences – I now am typing and smiling (not in a creepy way but just like a grin).
Anyway, I’m gonna get back to planning my second video that I’ve been planning for the last 2 months and maybe, hopefully, probably actually “create” it soon. Thank you for reading this and as always insert wholesome statement here.
