Hello, everyone. Today I want to talk about “The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck”. This amazing, inspiring book with probably one of my favorites covers. Like I really think it’s a must read. Why?
I think it’s the color and the feel of it. It’s like matte. So like the matte orange and black combo just like fits really nicely together. Anyway, this book has about 200 pages, so it’s not really that long. It’s easy to read. Like it just has this flow that makes you want to turn to the next page and continue reading on and on. I mean, this is the fastest I’ve ever read a book. Or at least the most I’ve been motivated to finish one. It’s got 9 chapters and each of those chapters has about 2 to 4 mini chapters, each with like a short message that builds up to the chapter’s message, which, in turn, build up to the one large message of the book.
The first time I picked up this book, the first thought that came to my mind was “Oh, great. Some dude called Mark Manson wants to tell me he’s cool cause he doesn’t care.” Still, considering it had this gorgeous goddamn cover – I decided to give it a try. From the first page I was hooked. You see the message isn’t that you shouldn’t care at all, but that you should know what to care about. The first, and well kind of the only real step here besides experience is to set priorities. For example, let’s say you spilt some milk. What do you do next? You don’t cry, but you wipe the table and go on with your day and maybe learn a lesson about not putting your milk in such a shitty spot. You got a partner that’s going through something in life? Take some time to talk to them about it and help them get through it.
There’s this quote by Charles Bukowski at the end of the book that I just love and it goes like this:
We’re all going to die, all of us. What a circus! That alone should make us love each other, but it doesn’t. We are terrorized and flattened by life’s trivialities; we are eaten up by nothing.
Don’t waste your time on bullshit. Don’t waste your time overthinking every little thing. Live your life. Love your peers. Laugh your way through life. There’s no point in getting angry at every little thing that happens. There just simply isn’t enough time in our lives for hate.
So how do you actually end up not caring? How do you do it, since it’s not that easy to just not care? I think it just boils down to, well, self-awareness. Let’s say you bump into the coffee table…again. Instead of getting mad at it and hitting it with your foot, talk yourself into not doing that. Why? Because that is a complete waste of both energy and time – which arguably are the most valuable resources that exist. Self-awareness is about looking at yourself from the perspective of another person. Like a third person view in a video game (i.e. World of Warcraft or even Diablo).
I just think that self-awareness really is like the one main thing that every person (mostly once you’re adult) has to practice to become a better human, a better part of society.
I just kind of wanted to get this off my chest. Hope this maybe helped or inspired you in some way. Thank you for reading. Check out my socials below, blah blah blah…
