Soundtrack: Season 1 Review

Before I really get into it, I want to say that there won’t be any major spoilers in this review, but some mild details might find their way in.

There’s a couple main points I want to talk about in this review, so let’s get started.

FIRST – The real idea of the show

You know that moment when you get some awesome news and you just feel like you’re in a musical and in your mind you’re just singing your heart out and everybody’s like applauding you and stuff? I hope you understand what I’m talking about, cause this is what “Soundtrack” is about.

At first, during the first “singing” scene I thought the show was weird and frankly low-quality, but then later on during the same episode I realized that this was actually intended to be this way. By “this way” I mean that the actors didn’t actually sing the songs, but they just lip synced to the authentic song playing in the background. This aspect of the show is what reinforces the fact that them singing and dancing isn’t actually happening, but it’s all in their head, which is something interesting.

SECOND – It’s a bit confusing

At first anyway. Mostly in the first episode and mostly because there’s multiple timelines, which we learn at the end of the first episode. Because of that, while watching the pilot, there are scenes that just seem like they don’t make sense. BUT it’s really nothing major, because the other aspects of the episode, like the songs, acting, choreography, etc., are really good and well-matched so to say.

THIRD – It’s all about the beginning and the end

Something that screamed in my face, so to say, was the fact that the middle of the show was very boring (in my opinion). Starting around episode 3, the show kind of lacks in many aspects. Starting with the fact that the songs used are kind of boring and definitely cheaper, cause I swear only God has heard of them or at least I haven’t for sure. Also the musical parts are spread out more and the story got boring. Some episodes I basically forced myself to watch (though this might not be the case for many other viewers). But, to be honest, it’s worth it once you get to the second to last episode and especially the finale.

The final episode really is beautiful. It concluded the whole season and left a certain possibility for another season (which considering it’s Netflix – it’s most probably going to happen).

So yeah, basically you can see that they used their limited budget, in my opinion, the right way and they made the pilot very attractive by spending more money on the songs and on the finale which also had some very beautiful scenes.

FORTH – It’s way deeper than you’d think at first

Something I really liked was an aspect of the show that we really find out about only around episode 6 (if I’m not mistaken) – which is that the show is sort of a metaphor for Nellie’s life and it’s made in the same way that her BOOK is made (her book is a big part of the show – you’ll understand when you watch it). This made me enjoy the show more, especially because this was revealed when the show was kind of getting bring for me, so I guess you could say it saved the experience for me.

summary

So, overall, I believe that this TV Show is quite unique and, from what I’ve seen, a never-before-done-thing – so hats off to Joshua Safran (creator of Soundtrack). I enjoyed it, especially the pilot and the last 2 episodes.

Final Score: 8/10

REASONS:

  • Some of the songs in the middle of the show were boring.
  • Starting with episode 3 up until the finale the show lacks something to keep the viewer truly interested in watching the show.
